Position Overview
We seek an experienced accounting professional to provide hands-on leadership of the accounting and financial reporting functions. This person will manage the development and maintenance of financial processes and systems to insure proper financial controls, timely and accurate management reporting, and effective utilization of the Company’s resources. This is a high visibility position with regular interactions with senior management, vendors, and customers. We seek a proactive, high-potential individual who takes ownership of his/her responsibilities and strives for excellence.
Primary Responsibilities
- Supervise and maintain the general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory, fixed asset, equipment leasing, purchase order, and financial reporting systems.
- Prepare financial statements (including month-end, quarter-end, and end-of-year close), journal entries, reconciliations, and budget-to-actual reports.
- Direct the maintenance, selection, and enhancement of the company’s G/L and financial systems to ensure accuracy, facilitate reporting, and accommodate growth. • Establish and ensure compliance with a system of internal accounting controls, policies, and procedures.
- Develop revenue recognition policies and procedures in compliance with SOP 97-2 and manage billing and collections in consultation with Sales and Operations departments.
- Supervise expenditure approval and payment processing systems and procedures.
- Develop and monitor customer order processing policies and procedures in consultation with Sales and Operations departments and resolve credit card issues (e.g. account verification, declines, etc.).
- Prepare weekly key business metrics report and distribute to senior management.
- Process and track B2B software sales agreements and support and maintenance renewals.
- Maintain and track research grants, request grant draw-downs, and report all related transactions on a quarterly basis to grantor agencies.
- Calculate monthly sales commissions and review payment allocations with Sales and Operations departments.
- Conduct physical inventory at fulfillment vendor warehouse annually and at other times as needed.
- Monitor cash balances and prepare regular cash flow projections as requested.
- Act as liaison with outside Big 4 audit firm and supervise compliance with audit recommendations.
- Participate in the formulation of tax planning strategies and prepare sales tax and other tax returns (with assistance of external accounting firm, as necessary).
- Assist in preparation of annual budget, long-term plan, and quarterly forecasts.
- Prepare quarterly royalty reports and financial and cost analyses as requested by management.
- Recommend cost control measures and monitor compliance with same.
- Develop significant trend indicators and report on them regularly to management.
- Supervise small accounting staff.
Candidate Profile
- BS degree or equivalent in Accounting/Finance/Business. CPA is a plus, but not required.
- Minimum of 5+ years accounting experience with progressive growth in responsibilities, including 2+ years in public accounting and 2+ years of supervisory experience.
- Must be willing to dig into the details, be very hands-on, and have a high degree of integrity.
- Mastery of core accounting areas. Strong knowledge of GAAP methods and procedures, software and website development accounting issues, and software revenue recognition (AICPA’s SOP 97-2).
- Working knowledge of cost accounting concepts, principles and practice (Inventory, Standards, Variances, Overhead, etc.)
- Self-starter, high-potential individual with strong solution-focused problem solving skills.
- Must have the ability to multi-task, the flexibility to stretch from processing checks to developing complex analyses, and a willingness to work extended hours as required.
- Capacity to deal with the growing pains of a fast-paced start-up environment and to introduce processes and structure at a measured pace.
- Team player with excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Strong proficiency in Excel, Word, Access, and implementation experience with mid-market accounting software systems (e.g., Great Plains, MAS 90/200/500, NetSuite, etc.).
- Familiarity with e-commerce and/or software businesses a plus, but not required.
